Protecting the Places We Love to Explore

Every destination leaves an impression on us, and each year, World Environment Day reminds us that we also leave an impression on the destinations we visit.

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ leading global platform for environmental action, observed annually since 1973. Led by UNEP, it brings together governments, businesses, and communities across more than 150 countries to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The 2026 celebration, hosted by Azerbaijan in Baku, focuses on climate action, emphasizing the urgent need to respond to the signals of a changing Earth and strengthen the connection between climate action and nature. Under the global call on: “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future”, the event will invite the international community to advance cooperation, share solutions, and accelerate progress towards a climate-resilient future by harnessing the power of nature.

World Environment Day 2026 calls on governments, cities, businesses, organizations, and people everywhere to take action.

World Environment Day & Sustainable Travel

Every journey begins with a destination. A beach that inspires us to slow down, a forest trail that invites us to explore, or a historic town that connects us to the stories of the past. On World Environment Day, globally celebrated on June 5th, we are reminded that these places do not exist solely for us to enjoy today, but also to preserve for the generations who will visit tomorrow.

As travel continues to evolve, sustainability is no longer viewed as a trend or a single initiative. It has become a shared responsibility between destinations, businesses, and travellers alike. Whether exploring the coastlines and villages of Rhodes or the cultural landmarks of Athens, the choices we make influence the future of the places we love to explore.

Protecting the Places We Love to Explore

Rhodes is an island defined by its natural beauty and cultural heritage. From long stretches of coastline and pine-covered hills to medieval landmarks and traditional villages, its appeal lies in the diversity of experiences it offers. Preserving these landscapes and communities is essential to ensuring that future visitors can enjoy the island in the same way that we do today.

World Environment Day offers an opportunity to reflect on how tourism and sustainability can work together to support the long-term well-being of destinations like Rhodes.

Why Sustainable Travel Matters More Than Ever

Travel creates meaningful connections between people and places. It supports local economies, encourages cultural exchange, and helps communities thrive. At the same time, growing visitor numbers place increasing pressure on natural environments and local resources.

This is why sustainable travel has become such an important conversation. It is not about limiting experiences or sacrificing comfort. Rather, it is about finding ways to enjoy a destination while helping to protect the qualities that make it special in the first place.

Today, sustainability is increasingly viewed through the lens of stewardship; caring for a place so that it can continue to be enjoyed and appreciated long into the future.

Small Choices That Make a Big Difference

Responsible travel is often shaped by simple decisions. Choosing local products and businesses helps support communities directly. Respecting nature trails and wildlife protects fragile ecosystems. Reducing unnecessary waste and using resources thoughtfully contributes to the overall wellbeing of a destination.

Even slowing down can make a difference. Walking through a village instead of rushing between attractions, spending more time outdoors, or learning about local traditions creates a deeper connection with the place itself.

While these actions may seem small individually, together they contribute to a more thoughtful and sustainable way of travelling. For travellers interested in learning how sustainability can be integrated into the hospitality experience itself, exploring these sustainable luxury and green stay experiences offers further insight into how responsible travel and comfort can coexist.

Experiencing Rhodes More Thoughtfully

One of the most rewarding aspects of Rhodes is the opportunity to experience the island beyond its most familiar landmarks.

Exploring traditional villages, discovering local flavours, visiting cultural sites respectfully, and spending time in nature all offer a richer understanding of the destination. Whether walking through the Medieval City, admiring coastal landscapes, or exploring lesser-known corners of the island, meaningful travel often comes from engaging more deeply with a place rather than simply passing through it.

This approach not only creates more memorable experiences for visitors but also helps support the local communities, traditions, and environments that give Rhodes its unique character.

While travellers play an important role through the choices they make, meaningful progress also depends on the long-term commitments of the businesses and organisations that operate within these destinations.

H Hotels Collection’s Commitment to Climate Action

At H Hotels Collection, our commitment to responsible tourism extends beyond environmental awareness and into measurable action. Across our properties, we continue to implement initiatives and annual targets designed to support climate legislation, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to a more sustainable future for Rhodes and the wider tourism industry.

A key focus of this effort is the verification and reduction of carbon emissions. Through annual monitoring of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, we have established a target to reduce emissions by at least 30% by 2030. Achieving this goal requires collaboration across our organisation, from Purchasing and Technical teams to external suppliers who share our commitment to responsible business practices.

Our climate action strategy also prioritises energy efficiency and resource management. Ongoing initiatives include staff training programmes, optimisation of equipment performance, the gradual replacement of propane-powered systems with electric alternatives, and the monitoring and upgrading of cooling equipment to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

At the same time, we continue to pursue reductions in water consumption and energy use while maintaining a lower carbon footprint across our operations. Supporting these efforts is our ISO 50001 Energy Management System certification, which provides a framework for evaluating, prioritising, and implementing new energy-efficient technologies while continuously improving energy performance throughout the collection.

While sustainability is an ongoing journey, we believe meaningful progress is achieved through consistent action, measurable targets, and a long-term commitment to protecting the destinations we proudly call home.

Why Connection Inspires Conservation

People naturally protect the places they feel connected to. The more deeply we engage with a destination, whether among the coastal landscapes of Rhodes or the historic streets of Athens, the more invested we become in its future.

World Environment Day reminds us that sustainability is not a one-day initiative but an ongoing commitment shared by travellers, businesses, and local communities alike. Every thoughtful choice contributes to the future of the places we cherish, helping to ensure that the landscapes and experiences that inspire us today remain vibrant for generations to come.
